2024

John Matthews (United States)

 

Dr. Matthews has secured approximately $10 million in research funding from various sources, including the National Science Foundation and state agencies. His previous roles include Program and Water Market Sector Manager at Pure Technologies and Principal Research Scientist at Battelle Memorial Institute, where he led projects for the EPA, WRF, and DoD.

He has contributed significantly to the development of automated decision support systems and has been involved in numerous trenchless technology projects. His work has been recognized with three ISTT No-Dig Awards and a NASTT Outstanding Paper Award. Dr. Matthews has authored or co-authored over 300 publications and delivered more than 200 presentations at national and international conferences.

An active member of professional associations, Dr. Matthews has served on the Board of Directors for both the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT) and the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT). He is also an Associate Editor for the ASCE Journal of Pipeline Systems Engineering and Practice. In 2023, he was honored as the Trenchless Technology Person of the Year. Additionally, he has been the chair of the ISTT's Technology and Education Committee since 2022.

 

Börje Persson (Spain)

Since attending his first No-Dig conference in London in 1988, Börje has been a prominent figure in the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT) and its global events. Over the years, he has actively contributed to advancing trenchless solutions, presenting numerous technical papers on pipe rehabilitation technologies. His expertise is particularly focused on CIPP and UV-cured structural lining solutions, with publications that explore the use and innovations in light-cured glass fibre reinforced CIPP, its applications and environmental advantages.

Currently serving as vice chair of both the ISTT’s Finance Committee and the Technology and Education Committee, Börje’s thought leadership in the field spans continents, with his work showcased at major conferences across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Between 2000 and 2022, his contributions have played a vital role in addressing both the technical and practical challenges of pipeline rehabilitation.

In recognition of his unwavering dedication, Börje was named a Fellow in 2024, underscoring his impact as both a practitioner and advocate for trenchless technologies. Through his leadership, technical expertise, and commitment to education, Börje continues to drive innovation and collaboration within the trenchless community worldwide.
